What are collectors looking for?

‘The market is highly selective and major collectors are very demanding,’ says Alexis Bordes, an expert at Rennes Enchères. ‘Cultivated and passionate, they seek out the best of the great artists and the major works of the minor masters.

In recent years, Rennes Enchères has distinguished itself in this speciality by discovering and offering for sale exceptional works, each time creating an international buzz.

Paintings and drawings by the Italian masters are always highly sought-after. The sale of a panel by the primitive Mariotto di NARDO depicting the Virgin and Child surrounded by saints sold for €81,000 on 4 April 2023 at Rennes Enchères. Or a record-breaking work by Francesco Berbieri, known as LE GUERCHIN, a famous member of the 16th-century Bolognese school, whose depiction of Saint Peter in prison fetched €110,000 on 12 February 2020 at Rennes Enchères.

Paintings from the Flemish and Dutch schools are also highly prized, reaching record heights at auction. Recently at Rennes Enchères, an exceptional work by the artist Pieter BRUEGHEL II, very rare on the art market, sold for €320,000, 10 times its estimate!
