What are customers, collectors, and the art market looking for?
The very greatest collectors are looking for Italian violins: those of the great violin makers of Cremona, extremely rare and inaccessible instruments, signed AMATI, GUARNERI, STRADIVARI. The violins of the French violin makers of the Mirecourt school are highly rated, such as VUILLAUME, LABERTE, THIBOUVILLE LAMY, COUESNON.
The prize goes to Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume (1798-1875), “the French Stradivarius”. In 2015, Alain Hérou authenticated for Rennes Enchères a magnificent violin by this violin maker sold for 169,400 euros. Hence a renewed interest in Vuillaume’s instruments.
The violin makers of the Paris school are also very appreciated like Jacques BOQUAY, François PILLEMENT, Auguste-Sébastien BERNADEL…
