Art market trends?

The market for modern and contemporary art is flourishing. It has grown strongly in recent years. Major collectors are looking for signatures and exceptional works from the major trends in 19th and 20th century painting. Rennes Enchères dedicates 2 or 3 auctions a year to this speciality, which often reach record levels.

Particularly sought-after works such as ‘Le port de Saint-Tropez’ by the pointillist Maximilien LUCE sold for €970,000 in 2008 at Rennes Enchères. Another exceptional group of 42 paintings by Henri MARTIN, which had been lying dormant in a flat in Rennes since 1929, sold for a total of €3.5 million at Rennes Enchères in 2012.

More recently, two exceptional collections were discovered in the Rennes region. The first, sold in July 2022 for a total of €1.6 million, includes some of the greatest artists of the 20th century, including Bernard BUFFET, Yves BRAYER and Camille HILAIRE.

The second, in December 2022, brought together the greatest names in Impressionism: Henri de TOULOUSE-LAUTREC, Camille PISSARO and above all Claude MONET, with a view of Etretat sold for €300,000 under the hammer of Carole Jézéquel.

Attached above all to its Breton roots, Rennes Enchères regularly presents the painters of the Pont-Aven School, such as Henry MORET, and Breton masters such as Mathurin MEHEUT and Ernest GUERIN always attract the interest of collectors and museums in Brittany.
