What are collectors looking for, what are the trends in the art market? In the opinion of Bertrand Berthelot, furniture and objets d'art expert for Rennes Enchères, connoisseurs and collectors remain faithful to ‘timeless classics’.
Eighteenth-century marquetry furniture, glassware from the Ecole de Nancy, notably from
GALLE and DAUM, porcelain from the Manufacture de
VINCENNES - SEVRES, giltwood mirrors, quality chandeliers, fine gilt bronze clocks, tapestries from the
Manufacture de Gobelins or Aubusson.
The ‘Furniture and Works of Art’ speciality is particularly well developed at Rennes Enchères, and sales dedicated to this speciality regularly reach the highest levels.
A case in point is the sale at Rennes Enchères of an exceptional vase by
HABERT DYS for €196,000 in 2015, after a long bidding battle. More recently, a desk by the famous 18th-century cabinetmaker
Charles CRESSENT sold for €180,000 in 2023.
There is a clear trend towards the acquisition of rare, high-quality pieces that do not require restoration. ‘The exceptional always arouses wonder, curiosity and therefore covetousness’.
