What are customers, collectors and the art market looking for?

There has been a palpable craze for Breton decorative arts in recent years, particularly for earthenware. Collectors are becoming increasingly familiar with the great names of the Breton artistic revival, and are actively seeking out their finest pieces. In painting, the biggest names are the most sought-after, such as Mathurin MEHEUT and Ernest GUERIN.

Artists from the Ar Seiz Breur movement are particularly popular. This was demonstrated by the exceptional sale that took place on 13 July 2023 at Rennes Enchères. The clientele is not just local. In fact, the largest collection of Ar Seiz Breur objects outside Brittany can be found at the Wolfsonian Institute in Miami!

Prices have soared for the engravings and earthenware of Jeanne MALIVEL, creator of the movement, and those of René-Yves CRESTON. A record-breaking earthenware globe by Creston sold for €23,500.

Other prominent members include Suzanne CANDRE-CRESTON, Jorj ROBIN, Xavier DE LANGLAIS, Joseph SAVINA and Gaston SEBILLEAU.

The earthenware is very popular, most of it coming from the Henriot factory in Quimper. The most popular name is Robert MICHEAU-VERNEZ, who left his mark on the history of the factory through his long and prolific collaboration.

His models are highly prized and find buyers at all prices, depending on the rarity of the model.

Emile-Just BACHELET, Armel BEAUFILS, Louis-Henri NICOT, René QUILLIVIC and Jim SEVELLEC are other sought-after artists from the Seiz Breur movement.
