Art market trends? The great French goldsmiths of the 18th century are quoted on the international market, in Europe and the United States, particularly those objects that escaped the great foundries of the Age of Enlightenment.
Attention is also turning to the silversmiths who worked for the kings and whose works can be found in museums, such as
Thomas GERMAIN and his son
François-Thomas GERMAIN, Robert-Joseph AUGUSTE, Jacques ROETTIERS...
For the 19th century:
ODIOT, BIENNAIS, THOMIRE, suppliers to the Emperor.
And, of course,
CHRISTOFLE and its founder, Charles, who invented electroplating to produce the silver metal we all know today. While everyday household sets are less popular on today's market, exceptional pieces can fetch very high prices. In 2017, for example, a superb trophy chased in 1863 by Christofle for the regional agricultural competition in Rennes sold at Rennes Enchères for €16,500.
Twentieth-century silverware is also highly prized, particularly from the Art Deco period, a style that is still very popular today. The emblematic goldsmith of this style is
Jean PUIFORCAT.
