Attributed to Gillis II van Coninxloo (Antwerp 1544 - Amsterdam, 1607) The prophet Jeremiah in the desert surrounded by wild animals and accompanied by a lion Oil on copper 45.7 x 70.2 cm The abundance of detail in this undergrowth is reminiscent of the hand of the Flemish painter Gillis Il van Coninxloo (Antwerp 1544- Amsterdam 1607), renowned for his lushly vegetated landscapes. Between the hunters, swans, goats, snakes and many other wild beasts, stands out the prophet Jeremiah, accompanied by the lion in the foreground: "My inheritance has been to me like a lion in the forest, He has uttered his roar against me; Therefore I have hated him." (Jeremiah 12:8) The more applied touch of these two figures makes us think of the probable contribution of a second hand, as was customary in 16th-century Antwerp. The preciousness of this commission is underlined by the use of copper as a support, an expensive and prestigious material, but also by the exceptional dimensions of this work. The composition is known from an engraving by Nicolaes de Bruyn (1571 - 1656) dated 1608 in the Harvard Art Museums/Fogg Museum (inv. R5800). Nicolaes de Bruyn made numerous engravings based on the work of Gillis Van Coninxloo.
