Sculpture representing a zouave with apparent sex. He holds - Lot 36
Sculpture representing a zouave with apparent sex. He holds his rifle on his shoulder. Bronze with high copper content. Height : 22 cm. Republic of the Ivory Coast. Dan ethnic group. This may be a work by John Leh of Gbabobli, who is one of the two best known bronze founders in twentieth century Liberia along with Ldamie of Gaple. Leh made his sculptures using the lost wax method. Leh's clientele in the 1920s and 1930s consisted primarily of military personnel, government officials, and missionaries. He often chose to depict soldiers of the Liberian Frontier Force, a battalion formed in 1908 to defend the country's borders against France and England, the two invading colonial powers. In addition to the rounded arms, shoulders, and legs that characterize his work, he also frequently depicted the outfits sewn into strips as seen here. See Barbara C. Johnson, "Brass Casting in Liberia." in Visions from the Forest: Arts of Liberia and Sierra Leone (2014).
