Sextant mounted on a tripod stand. The same device could thus be used at sea by dissociating it from its foot and on land for coastal survey (geodesy). The high precision sextant is remarkable for the composite structure of its frame assembled with precision screws. It is signed "CARY - London". Radius 28 cm. The tripod foot is articulated, the legs are with wedge screws. The sextant is held in a balanced position by two adjustable counterweights. Total height 54 cm. Circa 1780/1790. Note: William CARY (1759 / 1825), who was trained by Jesse RAMSDEN, is one of the most talented scientific instrument makers of the late 18th century. Exceptional condition for its age.
